Civic Day - 17 July 2007

The 2007 Civic Day at Silverdale Holiday Centre was one of the best days that the Trustees and staff have experienced in many years.  The Civic Guests included the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Brian Cleasby, Lady Mayoress of Leeds, Mrs Jocelyn Cleasby (President of Leeds Children's Holiday Camp Association), The Right Worshipful the Mayor of the City of Lancaster, Councillor Helen Helme, the Mayoress of the City of Lancaster, Miss Patsy Cragg, together with several other Councillors from both Leeds and Lancaster, and two Honorary Aldermen of Leeds.  The children really enjoyed playing hosts to their guests, and were delighted to show everyone around Silverdale Holiday Centre as well as informing them of all their planned activities.  We had the most glorious day of sunshine which helped to show the Centre off at its best with fantastic views across Morecambe Bay.

This is the first year that the Mayor of the City of Lancaster has been at Silverdale's Civic Day for many years, but we hope that it will be the first of many future visits that the Mayor and Mayoress will make to Silverdale Holiday Centre.

The Trustees would like to thank everyone for their support on the day, and for making this a day to remember for the children.

Free transport to Silverdale from Northern Rail

The Trustees are really pleased to announce that help has been offered to the charity by Northern Rail in the form of free passes for the children to once again travel on the train from Leeds Station to Morecambe where they can enjoy their holiday in a safe and secure environment. From what we can gather from records, we think that the last time children were sent to Silverdale by train was in the Edwardian times, ie early 1900s.

This is really great news for the charity, but an even greater experience for the children. Some of the children who travel to Silverdale have never been on a train before and they all really enjoy the trip.

Northern Rail has also offered free tickets to the staff and children for day trips along the Cumbrian coast, and I am sure that these will be enjoyed through the summer months.

The Trustees would like to thank Drew Hayley at Northern Rail for all his help and support which is greatly appreciated by everyone.

Applications for Holidays at Silverdale during 2008

The Trustees are pleased to announce that approximately 300 applications have been received for the places available at Silverdale Holiday Centre during the 2008 holiday season.

The children who will enjoy a holiday at Silverdale during the summer months are disadvantaged due to poverty, neglect, abuse, disability, dysfunctional families, children who are young carers themselves, or children who may be in foster or social care.

The families and children who are helped by the charity are from the most deprived areas of Leeds. Some of the children have never been out of the City and find it totally amazing to see fields, cows, sheep and horses in the fields, and the sea is something that they would never otherwise have an opportunity to see and enjoy.

The very worthwhile services provided by the charity are as much needed today as when Leeds Children’s Holiday Camp Association was founded in 1904, and this is recognised by all the organisations that the Trustees work closely with.

Hire of Silverdale Holiday Centre

In order to raise funds for the purpose of the charity, ie to provide free holidays/respite for disadvantaged children, the Trustees are looking to hire Silverdale Holiday Centre at times when the children are not in residence.

The Trustees have produced a brochure that is being circulated to potentially interested groups in order to promote the use of the one asset of the charity that could be used to raise much needed revenue.

Silverdale Holiday Centre is situated in Silverdale, near Arnside and Carnforth on the boundary between Lancashire and Cumbria within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Its limestone hills, salt marsh, foreshore fen, parkland and woodlands have contributed towards the area being designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Biological Heritage Site and Local Nature Reserve.

The area is popular with nature lovers, walkers and ramblers, fans of outdoor pursuits, holiday makers and visitors alike. The Centre is a perfect location for residential use by youth groups, scout and guide groups, residential training courses and staff development/team building courses.

Silverdale Holiday Centre can accommodate up to 50 people staying in residential buildings. Sleeping accommodation for 40 people is in two large rooms which have been partitioned to create 10 twin bedded rooms. There are also 6 separate bedrooms for staff and adult groups comprising 3 twin rooms, 2 double rooms (one ensuite), and one family room with king-size bed and bunk beds. The facilities also include a shower room with 6 shower cubicles, and 3 separate bathrooms.

The Centre has a fully equipped kitchen and dining room, games rooms, and a common room. Groups may have the use of a fridge and freezer during their stay.

The extensive grounds of Silverdale Holiday Centre include a play area, sports ground, and wooded area for outdoor activities and games. No open fires are allowed in the grounds.

All private residential stays at Silverdale Holiday Centre must include staff to care for children and youths at all times, and are on a self-catering basis.

All safety equipment required is provided and is well maintained.

Unfortunately, the application submitted to the Children in Need Appeal has been rejected.

The Trustees would like to thank Damian Leach of Sabretooth Designs who has updated and created the charity's website as it now appears, and for continuing to update the site in order to keep it topical. As we are all aware, a website is an essential item in today's world and we are extremely grateful to Sabretooth Designs for all their generous help in putting the charity firmly on the internet.

The charity has received many small donations which are always very much appreciated, but are too numerous to list on the page. All monies received by the charity is used for the purpose it is given, and the trustees are extremely grateful for the support and generosity of all those who have helped Leeds Children's Holiday Camp Association by giving donations of money or in kind.

The gratitude of the Trustees is extended to everyone who supports the Leeds Children's Holiday Camp Association and its work with the families and children of Leeds.

Painting Competition 2008

The Trustees are very pleased to announce that prizes for the 2008 painting competition will be sponsored by the Leeds Rhinos. A representative of the Leeds Rhinos will join the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Leeds to form the judging panel for this year’s painting competition. All the children who enjoy a holiday at Silverdale Holiday Centre will take part in the competition, which has produced some exceptionally good artwork in previous years.

Annual Dinner Dance - Saturday 9 February 2008

The annual dinner dance, or Valentine’s Ball, took place this year on Saturday 9 February 2008 at the Civic Hall, Leeds pm. The Master of Ceremony was Roger Greenwood who encouraged everyone to take part in the auction and raffle on the evening. The sum raised for the charity on the evening was over £2000, and the Trustees are still receiving donations after the event. We would like to thank everyone who attended for making the evening so successful, and for their generosity.
