Silverdale Holiday Camp – The First 100 Years, by Frances McNeil

Meticulously researched and packed with personal recollections and memories, photographs and original reports and statistics, this book is a fascinating and endearing portrait of the ‘Leeds Poor Children’s Holiday Camp’ and the experiences of the children who have visited over the first 100 years.

The author, Frances McNeil, a ‘Silverdaler’ herself, has written extensively for theatre, radio and television. Her novel Somewhere behind the Morning, capturing lives in working class Leeds around the time of the First World War, is published by Orion. The central character in Sixpence in Her Shoe (Orion, August 2006) makes a journey from Leeds to Morecombe Bay in the late 1920s.
